Festival History

The Old Bar Beach Festival is an annual community event that has been held every October Long Weekend since 2005. From the humblest of beginnings, the festival has grown to attract more than 30,000 people each year.

The Kombi/Transporter Australian record attempt is one of the major highlights of the festival.  The number of Kombis attending the festival has steadily increased over the last 13 years due to the support of many owners who now have made the festival an annual pilgrimage.

For Kombi owners this festival is a place to meet and share their passion for their beloved buses with like-minded Kombi enthusiasts in a relaxed and festive atmosphere suited for the whole family.

Each year we look at what we can do to make the festival even better. The festival now boasts an impressive range of regular features:

  • Kombi Display, Parade, and Record Attempt
  • Old Bar Classic
  • Two full days of live music
  • Mega-Markets
  • Fireworks Display
  • Amusement Rides
  • Children’s Entertainment
  • Street-Food vendors

Kombis

On the October Long Weekend, Kombis from near and far gather at Old Bar to be part of our iconic Kombi events. Alongside VW Transporters and Utes, Kombis of all ages will be displayed over both days, showcasing their individuality and flair.

Kombi Cruise

Saturday of the October Long Weekend is the ‘Kombi Cruise’ day.

Kombis, and VW’s assemble on the Old Bar Air Strip ready to cruise along Old Bar Road to the highway roundabout and back.

The main street of Old Bar is lined with spectators to cheer on the VW’s.

The cruise takes about 45 minutes and is fantastic to be a part of.

“I was in the Kombi Parade in 2016. It was incredible to part of the parade, with so much appreciation from the spectators all the way along Old Bar Road. I can’t wait to do it again this year. Overall it is the best weekend for a Kombi owner all year. I’ve met lifelong friends at this event and it’s been great to share those kombi stories with so many other kombi owners”.

Kombi Display Record

On the Sunday, Kombis and VW’s gather at Old Bar to break the Australian record. Come down and see our record-breaking display of unique and treasured Kombis.

If you’ve got a Kombi, you are welcome to display it on Saturday alongside the Old Bar Classic display.

Got a kombi?

Want to be a part of the cruise or record breaking event? Simply head along to the Old Bar Beach Festival on the 29th-30th September 2018, and register your Kombi on the day.

Registration is just $5. You’ll get a sticker to say you were there, and go in the draw to win $1,000 to keep that kombi going for another year. There will also be some prizes from our sponsors up for grabs over the weekend!

Please check the registrations page for terms and conditions. The most important items are that you must still be there to win the $1,000 and that you must not move your vehicle between the hours of 8am and 4pm without an official escort.

Classic Cars, Beatles, and Bikes

The Old Bar Classic is held on the Saturday of the Old Bar Beach Festival. The number of classics is growing each year, as is the number of spectators.

Escape the busy crowds and explore the growing range of classics on display – from veteran to modern street machines and motorcycles. You might just find some inspiration for that project waiting in the back shed.

Own a ‘Classic’?

If you’re the owner of a ‘Classic’ — be it veteran, vintage, modern, muscle, hot rod, street machine or motorcycle — bring it along display your work to our crowd of thousands.

Registration is just $5. You’ll get a sticker to say you were there, and go in the draw to win $1,000 to keep that classic shiny for next year. There will also be some prizes from our sponsors up for grabs over the weekend!

Classics and Beetles are welcome, and encouraged, to tag onto the Kombi Parade at the end of the day on Saturday. See the Kombi page for details.
